Second Stop: Just Down the Street -MIYAGI's
Not sure why or how my ramblings of last night did not make it as a Post. Guess I'll figure things out as I go.The Yankees and Red Sox got rained out tonight so a trip/get-together with Jessi, Dani and Luke at Flight 151 got changed to Sushi at Miyagi's - thus fulfilling two of my three prophecies from the first blog. Not Bad
Miyagi's - Cool place also on West 13th Street - between 7th & 8th (Greenwich)
Cast of Characters: Jessi, her friend Katie, DaniDanger and Cool Hand Luke
Sake and Sapporo (no Ichiban served here) Lots of sake and lots of beer.
Conversation traveled from baseball to the Election - from websites to uni - from Luke's work to Dani's trip (upcoming in January) to Viet Nam. When I was 19 I was figuring out how not to go to Viet Nam and now she's that age and heading over with excitement and happy anticipation.
Miso soup - Salmon Summer Roll - Agetofu - spinach gomae (yummy) - Hiziki - Yellow tail sashimi - Miyagi Roll - Dragon Roll - Sweet Shrimp Sushi - Spicy Tuna Roll
We went for another round with more beer and some water: Salmon skin handrolls - spider roll - toro sashimi for yours truly.
The Yanks go back to work and I'm gonna stick with my sweep prediction cause that's what I'm rooting for at this point. KB and El Duque.
Recommendation for Miyagi: A Great Place to hang and eat and spend lots of Cool Cash. Last night's bill: $209 plus tip. A Good time was had by all
First Stop "Taste of Tokyo"
After threatening to list my sushi testing exploits for the last year or so I have been inspired by Jose Melendez who writes "The Keys to the Game" here and on the www.sonsofsamhorn.com website. Thanks Jose!Stop one: Taste of Tokyo on West 13th Street in NYC near the Quad Cinema.
Dined with Daniele {AKA DaniDanger, film student extraordinaire, daughter of Judy, my own daughter and "baby" sister to Luke www.lukemelia.com - Willie (major Yankee fan) - and Jessi - political activist beyond compare}
It was the off-day for the ALCS between the cursed Boston Red Sox and the much maligned New York Yankees. Everybody's been ragging the Yanks for their pitching this year, but the proof is in the pudding --- 101 regular season victories and holding the best hitting Sox team I've ever witnessed to no runs and 1 hit in the first 6 innings of Game 1 and Game 2. Dani was between classes and "Hadn't had sushi in a long time (probably a week or two)" so Dad (that's me) brought her to T of T for a quick $68 (plus tip) snack.
Dani ordered the Sunrise Sunset roll (with three kinds of caviar) and we had a Queens Roll - Crab, Hamachi and avocado plus some yellowtail sashimi, toro sashimi and Dani had a spicy scallop hand roll. I had a couple of Sapporo's and a good time was had by all.
Conversation centered around last night's "Who's Your Daddy?" game wherein Pedro pitched decently enough, but was undone by a great pitching performance by Jon Lieber and a great 1 ball 2 strike line drive Home Run by John "I-can't-believe-the-Mariners-put-him-on-waivers" Olerud.
Not the first time we've eaten at the Taste of Tokyo - in fact we first found that place when we were going to see a flick at the Quad back in the late 80's or early 90's/ the "we" being Judy (Dani's mom and my former wife) and myself.
Recommendation: It's a great place for a quick bite at the sushi bar before a movie at the Quad or sitting at a table with old friends/kids and telling outrageous stories.
Prediction: Yankees Sweep. Game three is rained out. We go to Miyagi's for Sushi before the weekend is out.
